Martin Mercer

Martin is currently a consultant, advisor and mentor to start-ups and scaling businesses.  He works with founders and leadership teams and typically facilitates the process of strategising through to effective execution; he helps businesses grow with confidence and control.  His work with leadership teams also encompasses effective team behaviours and mentoring and coaching.

For the decade to 2020 Martin was the CEO and MD of two high growth businesses.  He successfully led a disruptive start-up during its scale-up phase and an incumbent internet services business through a turnaround and ultimate transformation into a leading digital services business.  Martin has a deep understanding of digital technologies and digital operating models following more than 20 years working in the technology businesses.  From 2014 to 2020 Martin was the CEO of Arq Group Ltd, one of Australia’s leading digital services businesses.

Martin has enjoyed senior leadership roles in functional areas including sales, marketing, product management, channel management, business development, strategy & planning and this experience has been acquired in both B2B and B2C contexts.

Martin is also an experienced company director and board member with 12 years of accumulated board experience across 3 boards; including approx. 6 years’ as the MD of Arq Group (ASX:ARQ), 2 years as an NED on the board of Engin (ASX:ENG), and 3 years as the MD of a private company (vividwireless).

Approach

As an executive mentor Martin brings his broad experience to the table to help executives solve challenges they are confronting and to accelerate their development.  Martin has a warm and engaging style, but he also knows how and when to challenge. Martin’s purpose in life is to help people find meaning in work and to create the circumstances in which performance happens.  He works with mentees to help them be at their best.

Qualifications

Martin has a BA (first class honours) and an LLB from the University of Sydney.  He has also a Graduate Diploma in Finance from the SIA and was a mid-career fellow at the School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.

Personal Insights

When he isn’t working Martin enjoys cooking for friends and family, competing in ocean swims, working out, and tennis.
