Martin Mercer

Martin is a sought-after executive coach and mentor to senior executives, bringing to his engagements a wealth of experience from former and current CEO and Board roles. He is known for his strong business acumen and expertise in behavioural change.

For the decade to 2020, Martin was the CEO and MD of three high-growth businesses: two privately owned and one listed.  He successfully led a disruptive start-up during its scale-up phase, an incumbent internet services business through a turnaround and ultimate transformation into a leading digital services business, and a challenger brand in the broadband services market.  Martin has a deep understanding of digital technologies and digital operating models following more than 20 years working in technology businesses.

Martin is currently the CEO of Scentia Pty Ltd, a privately owned higher education and vocational training business that includes the Australian Institute of Management and the AIM Business School. He has enjoyed senior leadership roles in functional areas including sales, marketing, product management, business development, strategy and planning, and this experience has been acquired in both B2B and B2C contexts.

Martin is also an experienced company director and board member with 12 years of accumulated board experience across three boards; including approx. 6 years as the MD of Arq Group (ASX:ARQ), 2 years as an NED on the board of Engin (ASX:ENG), and 3 years as the MD of a private company (vividwireless).

Approach

As an executive coach and mentor, Martin brings his broad experience to the table to help executives solve challenges they are confronting and to accelerate their development.  Martin has a warm and engaging style, but he also knows how and when to challenge. Martin’s purpose in life is to help people find meaning in work and to create the circumstances in which performance happens.  He works with coachees and mentees to help them be at their best.

Given his fulltime CEO commitment, Martin only takes on a select few coaching and mentoring engagements.

Qualifications

Martin has a BA (first class honours) and an LLB from the University of Sydney.  He has also a Graduate Diploma in Finance, a formal coaching qualification, and was a mid-career fellow at the School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.

Personal Insights

When he isn’t working Martin enjoys cooking for friends and family, competing in ocean swims, working out, and tennis.
