David Pierce

David has over 40 years in development of leaders and leadership practice as a senior Australian Army officer, management consultant, strategic facilitator and executive coach. David has worked across the public, private and not for profit sectors with leaders at all levels in retail, logistics, manufacturing, agribusiness, education, and disability services. David’s focus has been working with executives as they navigate personal and organisational transitions.

As an Army officer, David was educated in leadership from the start of his career. A graduate of the Royal Military College Duntroon and the French War College Paris, he applied his knowledge of strategy and maximizing human performance as an officer in many complex defence organisations. As a senior officer he was responsible for leading a team of civilian, military and contract staff to rationalize, reengineer and implement a new HR service delivery function. He also enjoyed the opportunity to command Australian soldiers, a most rewarding part of his working life. David still serves as an Army Reservist.

As a management consultant, David continued on the path of reforming organisations and services in the public sector, designing and developing new business systems to deliver services to Australians effectively and efficiently.

After observing the human challenge of change, David focused on coaching leaders as they navigated career transitions. This focus was on how as leaders we could optimise our acceptance of the change event and build on the strengths to deliver successful results for individuals, teams and organisations. David widened his work with executives beyond the public sector and over the past 15 years has worked with leaders in many industries.

Approach

David’s coaching approach is grounded experience and knowledge of human behaviour especially when dealing with uncertainty. He believes we all have the answers, sometimes we don’t know where to look; a coach’s contribution is to ask the questions that allow the leader to reveal the answer.

Qualifications

David has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of NSW, a Graduate Diploma in HR from the University of Canberra and a Brevet d’Études Militaires Supérieures from l’École Militaire, Paris. He is a Professional Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation, and is accredited in Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI), Genos Emotional Intelligence Assessment (Genos), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Life Styles Inventory 1 & 2, and Group Style Inventory assessments instruments.

Personal Insights

David has volunteered on leadership teams in the Returned and Services League, Rotary International and the International Coach Federation. He recently completed a 15-month term as a director of Cootharinga, a disability services provider in North Queensland.

David has four adult children who are making lives of their own. His interests are ballroom dancing, soccer, walking and keeping fit.
