Steve Mann

Steve has brought extensive strategy, transformation and business development experience at an executive leadership level to his mentoring assignments. He has worked across a range of different industries including aviation, rail, infrastructure, transport, resources, steel, building products, manufacturing, travel. His work with executive groups and their senior management has helped them engage the workforce, transform organisations and meet the enormous change to which they were subjected. He has worked with several start-ups in a mentoring capacity at Stone and Chalk.

Steve is a seasoned executive, having held senior leadership roles at a number of top ASX companies including Aurizon, BlueScope Steel, Qantas and TNT. He is a non-Executive Director of QUBE Holdings Ltd and Chairman of the Audit and Risk Management Committee. He has also consulted independently to a range of organisations in Australia and internationally both large and small, bringing his corporate and personal experiences to the issues they are trying to solve.

Most recently, at Western Sydney Airport, he was leading the creation of a commercial and strategy function within this large infrastructure project, helping instil a collaborative culture with a commercial mindset.

Approach

As a mentor, Steve’s focus is on helping mentees broaden their perspective, both in terms of gaining and displaying an enterprise view but also demonstrating a strategic mindset. He believes strongly that leadership is about bringing people along the journey by helping them to understand the direction the organisation is going and why.
He has worked extensively with diverse executive management teams as they explore and eventually coalesce around a direction, which has helped give him depth of practical experience in a range of settings. This experience helps him understand and bring to life the executive level perspective for the mentee.

Qualifications

Steve has a master’s degree with Distinction in Business Administration from INSEAD and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering Science) from the University of Toronto. He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He holds a Cert IV in Workplace & Business Coaching (Open Door) is accredited in The Leadership Circle profile (TLC), is a member of the ICF and has received the ICCP Certificate in Executive Coaching.

Personal Insights

Steve is married with two sons and a daughter their twenties and enjoys kayaking, long walks and international affairs. He speaks Norwegian and some French and German.
