Bruce McKay

For almost 30 years, Bruce McKay had a successful corporate career spanning several industries and subsequently since the late 90’s has pursued a portfolio of interests including consulting, company directorships and executive coaching/mentoring. As such he brings expertise in organisational change, board/management relationships and governance, strategy implementation and specific sector experience in resources, energy and technology.

At the culmination of his international career with Exxon, he held the position of General Manager, Production for Esso Australia, responsible for the largest petroleum production operations in the country. Subsequently, Bruce became Director of Personnel at Telstra, then Chief Executive and Head of School of the Australian Graduate School of Engineering Innovation. He has undertaken a range of professional and management programs throughout his career and has been an Adjunct Lecturer in Technology Strategy at Macquarie Graduate School of Management.

In his Board portfolio, Bruce has held chair as well as non-executive director roles in ASX listed and private companies in resources, infrastructure, technology, education and government research agencies: he also served as chair of an industry advisory board at the University of Adelaide for more than 15 years. He is currently non-executive chair of ANU Enterprise and IPB Petroleum and a Board member of St Philip’s College Alice Springs.

Approach

As an Executive Coach and Mentor with SMG since 2000, Bruce has worked extensively with participants in financial services, technology, resources, construction, property, infrastructure, legal and government sectors. He has a passion for seeing individuals achieve their potential and has been effective in developing the careers of younger high potential managers, as well as mentoring C-suite executives in ASX100 companies and Australian subsidiaries of international corporations, newly appointed CEOs and owner/executives of private companies. He has also facilitated leadership programs with executive teams in public companies and government departments. Bruce has developed a suite of relevant coaching and mentoring skills enhanced by his own corporate experience, and a sound understanding of the business and behavioural challenges faced by individuals and organisations.

Qualifications

Bruce has an BSc (Hons) degree in Science from Sydney University and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Engineers Australia. He is experienced in a range of accreditations including LEA and TLCP.

Personal Insights

Bruce has been married to Lynda for over 45 years: they have two married daughters and three grandchildren. He is a keen golfer, an active walker and pilates participant and enjoys travel, wine and spending time with family.
